Dead Indian King Vulture, Gyps calvus, New Delhi, India
Air pollution and pesticide use (including ongoing use of DDT) in India have driven this species from 45 million a few years ago to the edge of extinction. This is a crisis for Parsi believers of the ancient religion of Zoroastrianism. They rely on these vultures to purge the bodies of the dead rather than allow the bodies of the dead to pollute sacred earth, water, and fire.
