Grey Hayes - coastalprairie@aol.com
Grey is a major contributor to this site. He is PhD biologist; one of his many research projects is the restoration of California's coastal praries. He has served on local Sierra Club and California Native Plant Society boards and is active in education and research to sustain California’s ecology. Grey has also served as steward for UCSC's reserve system and as consultant to The Nature Conservancy. He is currently employed by the Elkhorn Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve as the coordinator for the Coastal Training Program.

Mark is a major contributor to and provider of this site. He is a Santa Cruz-based nature photographer, naturalist, biologist and conservationist. He graduated from UCSC with a biology degree in 1993, worked for four years with the endangered Spotted Owl, and became a full-time photographer in 2000. Mark works with local biologists and organizations to publicize important environmental issues. Besides local papers and magazines, Mark's work has appeared in National Geographic, Outdoor Photographer, American Photo, and other major publications around the world.

Anya is the designer of this site, and is a minor contributor. She is a local illustrator, graphic/web designer, biologist and naturalist. A graduate of UCSC in both biology and science illustration, she has worked as an ornithologist in Costa Rica, Argentina, Hawaii, California and Washington state. Anya currently works as an illustrator and designer for educational publishing, scientific research, interpretive design and commercial marketing projects.

Caitlin Bean - cbean@coastal.ca.gov
Caitlin contributed to the Santa Cruz kangaroo rat and Zayante sand hills ecosystem texts. She is the HCP/NCCP Coordinator for the California Coastal Commission. She works with representatives from the Department of Fish and Game and the US Fish and Wildlife Service to resolve potential conflicts between the California Coastal Act and HCP's/NCCP's (Habitat and Natural Community Conservation Plans) in the Coastal Zone. She is in the process of finishing her Master's degree during which she focused her research efforts on developing a data set that would substantiate a listing petition for the Santa Cruz kangaroo rat.

Janet Linthicum

Janet contributed the text on the Burrowing Owl. She is currently a member of the research staff at the Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group. She has extensive experience with field observations of peregrine falcons, California condors, and bald eagles as a part of population recovery efforts for those species. In addition, Janet was a principal staff member in the Predatory Bird Research Group’s laboratory during its most productive years for raptor propagation. She is a co-author of the "Guide to Management of Peregrine Falcons at the Eyrie", and has been a staff member at SCPBRG since 1983.

Dan Harder - dkharder@ucsc.edu
Dan is the director of the UCSC Arboretum, an institution which is becoming a significant contributor to the conservation of plants and their habitats worldwide, with special emphasis on plants of California and Mediterranean climate zones of the world (esp. South Africa, Australia, New Zealand, and Chile). Inthe field, Dan has made numerous discoveries and descriptions of plant taxa new to science, including a genus of conifers. He has built successful botanical research programs in Africa and SE Asia, and has extensive experience with local, national and international regulations regarding threatened and endangered plants.


Ray Collett - rayc@cruzio.com
Ray was the founding director of the UCSC Arboretum. He has been a UCSC professor since 1965 and has taught a variety of subjects, from botany to biogeography to cartooning.
