7) BARBARA SHERIFF / WHAT SHE NEEDS

Barbara Sheriff needs an epitaph.
How’s she ever going to get one?

She was one of those women
Who ran this country
Back when doing so was cheap.
You couldn't say exactly
It was she who made decisions.
What she did was figure out
How to keep the place running.
She was one who did the work.

How did she ever do it?
Some people don't want to know
A thing about it.
You know why?
You know what Barbara was?
She was a secretary
Or in later parlance maybe an assistant..

Time came when Barbara
Needed to be replaced.
She got replaced. And did she ever!
Not by one guy but by armies--
All of them making so much money
And with such titles
They couldn't do any work.

Barbara was a secretary
Back before the notion started
That what this country needed
Was to support an administrative class
Made out of people
Often with the worst characteristics
Ever attributed to men
And the worst ones
Ever attributed to women.

Barbara came down
With an awful cancer,
Still kept volunteering at UCSC,
Where she'd always worked.
Then she died
And left all her money to UCSC.
She couldn't leave much.
They never paid her anything to keep.

Barbara Sheriff needs an epitaph.
She was one of those women
Who ran this country
Back back when doing so was cheap.
